The most important thing to remember about dichroic glass is the glass itself is not dichroic. The glass does not produce the colors is the Â'coating ' micro-thin films of various oxides and quartz that are applied to the glass surface. This creates a filtered Â'interference 'acting for good to reflect or transmit light depending on the oxides used, the thickness of the layers, and other similar factors. Dichroic glass manufacturing is a four-step process.
First, the glass is cleaned thoroughly in an impeccable atmosphere, depending on the final use, it can take up to four cleanings to the glass meets the technical specifications. The smallest piece of dirt, fingerprints or a patch of water may have an undesirable effect on the glass.
Once you clean the glass, the second step has a place-the glass is placed in an oven or a vacuum chamber containing an electron gun and a crucible or container where metal oxides are saved. The Air is pumped, the compression pressure within the chamber and at the right time, the electron gun is activated, vaporization of oxides. Oxides Steaming is condensed and adhere to any surface in a chamber, especially the glass.
Once the desired oxide thickness is achieved, the barrel electron and an oxide is turned off again placed for use, if necessary. The process is repeated until the desired thickness of a layer – or color provided – is achieved.
Then slowly, the air is pumped back into the camera, slowly cooling the molten glass, and taking the pressure inside the chamber to normal. The vacuum chamber is opened and the glass carried out, inspected, packed and shipped.
