Occasionally we receive requests for a precious stone called smoky topaz. We have to deliver the disappointing news that no such gems. The People are surprised to learn that from the smoky topaz appears to be widespread. How can that be?
The answer is that some unscrupulous dealers smoky quartz selling – an attractive, yet inexpensive stone – under the name topaz more expensive. This is not only dishonest, but does not do justice to smoky quartz, which is a interesting and unique gemstone in its own right.
There are relatively few gemstones that occur in dark brown or black. No black diamond, black onyx and tourmaline, and sometimes is dark brown tourmaline, scapolite and agate. It's pretty rare and distinctive color.
Fourth is a kind of smoky quartz macrocrystalline or silicon dioxide, the family that includes quartz amethyst, citrine and rose quartz. This type consists of large quartz crystals that can distinguish eye. Macrocrystalline is mostly transparent to translucent quartz, with a vitreous luster.
